So I finished Steins;Gate yesterday.

I dunno, it was certainly worlds better than Chaos;HEAd, but I got the distinct feeling that a lot was cut out of it. As well, some asshole spoiled the Mr. Braun is FB reveal, so that kind of sucked. To be honest, though, it didn't really ruin a whole lot. If I hadn't known, I would have been anticipating the "evil shadowy organization" thing much more, and been slightly more disappointed (I think) with the direction it took.

Anyway, so I wanted to ask you: has anyone read the VN for Steins? And how does it stack up to the anime? I wanted to read the VN, but last I heard, it wasn't even close to being translated. And once the above was spoiled for me, I figured it wouldn't make much of a difference. However, the difference between Chaos;HEAd as a VN and an anime, to me, was so stark that it made me genuinely curious as to what else I missed.

All in all, though, I would put this anime in the top 5 I've seen. I'm a huge time-travel junkie, though, so I was highly anticipating that I'd like it. And, while the ending was a little bittersweet, it was a fantastic journey overall. Recommended to anyone who likes sci-fi, time travel, tsundere, or all of the above.
>> No. 420
>has anyone read the VN for Steins? And how does it stack up to the anime?

My friend has played it, he said it's superior to the anime.

>I wanted to read the VN, but last I heard, it wasn't even close to being translated.

The official translation hasn't been completed yet (as far as I know), but there is a pre-patch out which you can find on nyaatorrents which patches everything as far as I know (I believe you need a working copy of the VN to install it on top of though).

The original pre-patch torrent was up'd in January and has instructions on how to install it on the torrent page, but there's an updated version which was up'd in May so you'll probably want to grab that one.

Also, Chaos;Head anime was probably the worst thing I've ever watched (at least to completion anyway). I've heard the VN is good at the start, but falls apart at after the mid-way point.
>> No. 422
Any1 heard about translation for the PSP version?
>> No. 423
>>420
Heh, nice get.

How superior? Would it be worth reading the VN after seeing the anime? I don't normally do that, but if there was a lot of content cut out, I'd really like to see it. I'm really not lying when I say that this is the first series that's caught my interest since Death Note.

Yeah, the last time I checked on the VN translation status was right about when the group who was doing the unofficial translation got their C&D from Nitro+. That's why I sort of gave up hope. If there are people still going at it, though, that's good to know. I'll have to look into that. Ideally, I'd planned to read it natively, but learning kanji has been a pain in the ass so far, and they used a lot of technical jargon. Maybe I'll try it with Robotics;Notes.

Yes, the Chaos;HEAd anime was absolutely terrible. That's why I was curious about the Steins VN after seeing how good the anime was. The Chaos;HEAd VN was actually not too bad -- it does sort of fall apart after the halfway point, but putting aside the confusing hikikomori bullshit (which was great in the first half, but just became cumbersome in the last half) the ending was tolerable. Nothing like that LOL FRIENDSHIP IS POWER crap that happened in the anime. I have heard that Steins was a much closer adaptation, though, which is what gives me slight reservations about dedicating the time to the VN.

After seeing the improvement from Chaos to Steins, though, I can say I am fully pumped for Robotics;Notes. Sounds like a good premise so far, and pretty relevant to my interests.
>> No. 424
>Would it be worth reading the VN after seeing the anime?
The guy I know said something to the effect of "don't bother with the VN if you watched the anime, unless you really loved the setting". I think he also said Okabe is quite different in the VN and comes across as a bit of a douche.

>the unofficial translation got their C&D from Nitro+
I don't think they got a C&D order. I think the guy leading the project got hired to do it officially, so the unofficial project he was running was disbanded. I think.

>After seeing the improvement from Chaos to Steins, though, I can say I am fully pumped for Robotics;Notes. Sounds like a good premise so far, and pretty relevant to my interests.
I'm eagerly awaiting that too. I hope it turns out to be good.

Summer Season is right around the corner.

What are you faggots watching?

I've skimmed over the chart and this season seems kind of weak, but I believe I'll be watching Kokoro Connect, Jinrui wa Suitai Shimashita and Kono Naka ni Hitori.

Hello people. I'm not huge on most anime, but I have enjoyed some series. Out of the few animes I've seen, I enjoyed Bleach and FMA: Brotherhood a good degree. Yu Yu Hakusho and Desert Punk are the best shows I've ever seen.
This week I finished watching both of the latter through and I'm not really sure what to do at this point, since I'm used to having 112 episodes of a show to plow through. What should I watch? Preferably something that's mainly about punching/shooting/cutting things and not schoolgirl drama.

Oh, and watch the Cowboy Bebop movie in case you haven't. It's pretty good. Also, the guy who did Cowboy Bebop did Samurai Champloo and that's worth checking out. Maybe not as good as Cowboy Bebop, but still has the same feel and just really bad ass. And the soundtrack is also pretty good if you like Hip Hop. Instead of space it's in feudal Japan.

And if you want another mecha series to look at besides the countless Gundam series, there's always Neon Genesis Evangelion. I've only seen parts of it, though, so I can't exactly recommend it.

The first Afro Samurai film was pretty cool, too. And the action scenes are done fairly well.

I hope you get out of only just wanting to watch only action Anime, cause there's so much good shit out there. Like the Studio Gibli films and some of Satoshi Kon's work like Paranoia Agent, Perfect Blue, and Tokyo Godfathers. Just so much good short series (like 20 or so episodes) and a bunch of great films.

And, believe it or not, the Naruto and One Piece series are actually really good with the original Japanese dubs if you can stand to read subtitles. The Westernization of them turned them to shit.

And for another sort of action oriented really long series there's Lupin the 3rd if you want to keep up with the shenanigans of a deadbeat thief and his gang.

Sorry for all the suggestions, but hope some of those peak your interest.

I just watched FLCL tonight, and I have to say, it's just six episodes of insanity. It is, however, immensely enjoyable, and very well animated. I was grinning through most of it, and there were even a few "Fuck Yeah" moments. Highly recommended.
>> No. 451
>>437
It's not so much that it wasn't funny, but it seemed deliberately generic and serious about it. "Yeah, this girl wears short shorts and we're showing you her ass for a full four seconds. And yes, she uses a massive rifle. You're supposed to like this stuff, shut up."
In comparison, Gurren Lagann has the exact same thing but seems to handle it in a manner I enjoy more. It's hard to describe, I don't know if anyone knows what I'm talking about.
>>438
I've read about FLCL being great so I'll watch it eventually. I watched the first episode of Gundam Wing and it seemed a little bit corny, but I don't think I gave it enough of a chance. I'm going to watch some of the original just to see, though.
>>440
I've seen all of the Studio Gibli movies and enjoyed them immensely. I just tend to enjoy more action-oriented stuff when I'm viewing it in short blocks of around a half hour, with long breaks in between since I rarely watch more than a few episodes a day, or a season in a week. It's also not just that I enjoy only constant explosions and gun/swordplay, it's that I tend to be wary of anime that doesn't fall under the 'action' umbrella because I just can't stand any touhou or K-on sort of stuff.
>> No. 453
I've been watching Neon Genesis Evangelion and have been enjoying it. Though, it is sort of confusing to me. I'd recommend it. It has a nice fresh take on Mecha anime. Currently on episode 21. There's only 26 of them and two movies or something. It's more of a character drama to me than big ass things fighting each other, but there's plenty of that too. Unfortunately, I couldn't find an english dubbed version so I'm not sure if one exists and I don't know how you are about reading subtitles.
>> No. 473
Neon genesis IMO is one the best amines ever made, and you guys have pretty much covered all of my other favorites. I do have one more addition though: Gun Grave. This one was a really good mob syndicate fighter about two street brothers who make it far in the mob and betray each other and one becomes good and tries to stop the other cause he's a bad ass pseudo superhuman with an awesome gun haha.

Wow. I didn't realize just how blatantly inferior post-Imaishi Gainax would be.

Medaka Box is such a fucking enormous step behind almost anything they've produced before. So very bland and stock in so many ways.

The funny thing is, there's some moments in the first episode clearly drawn by fun, talented Gainax artists, but It's directed in such a generic and plodding way that it's like the director was trying to squash out everything the storyboard artists had to offer.

Hopefully Trigger will make it's debut soon and we'll see the true spirit of Gainax continued.

By the way, which subs are you watching this show with? The only groups currently fansubbing it have been doing a pretty mediocre/bad job of it, so try watching CrunchyRoll's subs (search "HorribleSubs" on nyaatorrents) and see if you change your mind about it.

First version of the Spring 2012 chart has been released. What do you guys think?

I took on about 6 different series this season and ended up dropping most of them because I completely lost interest, so this time around I'll probably only pick up 2 or 3 at the most.

Admittedly though, there's not a whole lot that even interests me. Medaka Box sounds like it could be good, but the art style makes me think otherwise. Other than that, there's really only ZETMAN that somewhat grabbed my attention, but I feel like it has the potential to come across as very silly if not done right.

After a while of thinking about it, post your favorite anime 2011.

Award for Being Thoroughly Enjoyable - Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica. Much has been said about Madoka so I won't say too much else. I could understand why some might not find it enjoyable, you can't expect everyone to love it, but I think it appeals to very large base of viewers, and had the plot and characters were certainly very good in comparison to most of the deep-as-a-puddle anime released recently. Most things seemed to click well from writing, to character design, character development, philosophical undertones, and even music. If only it had better animation and artwork, it would be much better.

Award for What the Hell Did I Just Watch? - Mawaru Penguindrum. I've never seen a show or movie swing between radically different moods quite as effortlessly and smoothly as this one. Going from grave drama to irreverent black humor is not easy, and the strange-though-believable world of symbols and metaphors seems so relatable. It lacks in coherency, both in plot and its own philosophical charges, however, and abuses the BIG TWIST aesthetic, but the overall unique feel of the show and its interesting characters makes up for it. Also one of the best character albums (if you can even call it that) that I've heard.

Freddie Mercury Award for Exceptional Homosexuality - No. 6. I was rather enamored by this particular series from the very first prologue and excellent OP to the last couple of episodes. The world is a relatively cliched take on dystopian Big-Brother government conspiracies, if that story were to smoke some ganja. It's really the characters that keeps you tuning, though, and the plot keeps going at a steady interesting pace. And of course the sexual tension between the two main characters is irresistible.

Icy Heart Melter Award for Best Nutbladder-Buster - Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko. Not quite a harem, not quite a slice-of-life, leave it to Shaft to effectively parody a genre while executing it so attractively. While it's not entirely unique in its archetypes, it is somewhat refreshing and there seems to be something for everybody. But most of all it has a quirky atmosphere that is hard to hate. Between the girl who hides by wrapping herself in a futon and thinks she's an alien, a perfectly executed manic pixie dream girl, a horny single mother and salarywoman clinging desperately to her youth, and the near-mystical nice legs girl who likes to wear strange costumes, it tickled my spots and then some. The girl in a cute spacesuit who might actually have super-natural powers is just the icing on the cake.

The Cold Pizza Award for Noteworthy Mediocrity - Ano Hana. Started well enough, but played up the emotional angle a bit too much for me. It seemed like it was trying way too hard to pull heartstrings, when it had potential to approach these issues more maturely, I suppose. The ending was, of course, awful, and ruined the series for me.

Honorable Mentions That Are Not Over Yet or I Have Not Watched But I Heard Are Good and Probably Will Watch at Some Point in Time - Persona 4, Mirai Nikki, Guilty Crown

People still stream anime?

Go to http://myanimelist.net, find the anime you want to watch and then check the fansub section to see which groups it has been subbed by. You can get an idea of which groups did a good job and which didn't by reading the reviews.

Once you've chosen the group whose release that you want to watch (I would recommend Underwater's release for this anime), click their name and there should be a link to their website, along with a list of all the other anime they've subbed.

There should be a link to a torrent or DDL of every show they've done on their site, but if not then check the following sites:
http://www.nyaa.eu/ <--- It's doubtful that you won't be able to find what you're looking for here
http://bakabt.com/ (the search function is restricted to members only, but you can bypass this by going to Google and searching "[Anime Name] site:bakabt.com") <--- Good resource for finding older shows that might not be available on NyaaTorrents
http://tokyotosho.info/ <--- Another resource for older stuff, though lots of the torrents there are dead

Sometimes, especially with older shows, you just have to take whatever you can get, but for newer shows there's usually a wide range of releases to choose from.

If you're an otaku most people already assume you're some kind of pedophile, might as well just go for broke.

Which is kind of regrettable but I agree that if people already think you're some kind of pedo might as well go for broke and maybe even try to make it humorous like being a self parody of sorts (of course barring anything illegal). At least then people might think a little better of you for making them laugh and maybe if you act ridiculous enough people will think you're not a pedo at all and just doing it for the sole purpose of making a joke.

For the love of God don't do that. I simply meant if you like one girlie show you shouldn't be afraid of liking others. You're never really going to be liked or accepted for it. At best you can try and act gay or act like you enjoy it for the elaborate fashions and childhood wonderment.

It's true, architecture aside, Shaft are being painfully faithful to the novels where most would be taking liberties. It gives it the right pace for banter but as a result some bits do feel a little out of place.

I don't want to interfere, but IMHO it's just stupid to judge shows worth by OP (see: Magipoka, Narutaru or fuckton other examples) Show is a collection of silly gags (I guess it's a bit in Lucky Star or Nichijou format), but it's enjoyable. Also ED is hands down the best in this season, so...maybe you shouldn't be so quick to ditch it and give it a try?

Oh, no, I am not criticizing the show itself. It is actually pretty relaxing and surprisingly decent. It is just that its OP had really made me question my want to watch it. I guess I am just nitpicking, but still, I am surprised so many people find the Kill Me Baby OP good!

"Another" episode 3 spoilers...

Earlier in this thread, I mentioned my concerns about this anime ending up coming across as silly rather than creepy, and this episode really did a lot to reaffirm that.

First off, the eye colour thing - why, oh why, did they make her other eye green? Now she has exactly the same eyes as Suiseiseki from Rozen Maiden... what were they thinking?

Secondly, that fucking girl getting impaled on an umbrella... what the fuck? Have you ever seen an umbrella being sold anywhere with an end as sharp as that in your life? Of course you haven't, because nobody makes them like that since they're an obvious fucking safety hazard. Even so, assuming she did by some chance find an umbrella like that in a shop somewhere, why on Earth would she buy it? I mean, maybe a teenage boy would think it was a cool thing to have, but a girl (a seemingly awkward, geeky one at that)? You have got to be kidding me. Hell, where I live something like that is fucking illegal, and yet they expect me to believe that's the kind of thing a school girl would casually carry around and be allowed to bring to school? Sorry, not happening.

If they were going to have her die in that scene, couldn't they have just made her break her neck when she fell down the stairs?

Ughhhhh, I hope I'm just being cynical, but I have a feeling that this is just a taste of the silliness to come...

Completely agree with you on the eyes. Those were ridiculous, I do not understand why they had to bring Souiseseki into the show. That show is more silly than scary. Verdict: Dropped.
