After a while of thinking about it, post your favorite anime 2011.

Award for Being Thoroughly Enjoyable - Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica. Much has been said about Madoka so I won't say too much else. I could understand why some might not find it enjoyable, you can't expect everyone to love it, but I think it appeals to very large base of viewers, and had the plot and characters were certainly very good in comparison to most of the deep-as-a-puddle anime released recently. Most things seemed to click well from writing, to character design, character development, philosophical undertones, and even music. If only it had better animation and artwork, it would be much better.

Award for What the Hell Did I Just Watch? - Mawaru Penguindrum. I've never seen a show or movie swing between radically different moods quite as effortlessly and smoothly as this one. Going from grave drama to irreverent black humor is not easy, and the strange-though-believable world of symbols and metaphors seems so relatable. It lacks in coherency, both in plot and its own philosophical charges, however, and abuses the BIG TWIST aesthetic, but the overall unique feel of the show and its interesting characters makes up for it. Also one of the best character albums (if you can even call it that) that I've heard.

Freddie Mercury Award for Exceptional Homosexuality - No. 6. I was rather enamored by this particular series from the very first prologue and excellent OP to the last couple of episodes. The world is a relatively cliched take on dystopian Big-Brother government conspiracies, if that story were to smoke some ganja. It's really the characters that keeps you tuning, though, and the plot keeps going at a steady interesting pace. And of course the sexual tension between the two main characters is irresistible.

Icy Heart Melter Award for Best Nutbladder-Buster - Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko. Not quite a harem, not quite a slice-of-life, leave it to Shaft to effectively parody a genre while executing it so attractively. While it's not entirely unique in its archetypes, it is somewhat refreshing and there seems to be something for everybody. But most of all it has a quirky atmosphere that is hard to hate. Between the girl who hides by wrapping herself in a futon and thinks she's an alien, a perfectly executed manic pixie dream girl, a horny single mother and salarywoman clinging desperately to her youth, and the near-mystical nice legs girl who likes to wear strange costumes, it tickled my spots and then some. The girl in a cute spacesuit who might actually have super-natural powers is just the icing on the cake.

The Cold Pizza Award for Noteworthy Mediocrity - Ano Hana. Started well enough, but played up the emotional angle a bit too much for me. It seemed like it was trying way too hard to pull heartstrings, when it had potential to approach these issues more maturely, I suppose. The ending was, of course, awful, and ruined the series for me.

Honorable Mentions That Are Not Over Yet or I Have Not Watched But I Heard Are Good and Probably Will Watch at Some Point in Time - Persona 4, Mirai Nikki, Guilty Crown

I think Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magika was not only my favourite of 2011, but my favourite of all time. Steins;Gate was also excellent, and made it into my all time favourites list, albeit quite a bit further down than Madoka. Aside from those two, I can't remember watching anything memorable released in 2011, but I lost interest in anime for a while during that time so I probably missed out on a lot of shows.

I'd agree with your sentiments regarding Ano Hana. Aside from the fact that there were some pretty glaring plot holes, I was beyond disappointed by how they ended it.

Yeah,Madoka was great,especially the soundtrack.Good stuff.
'Better animation and artwork' you say?

Tied for top '11 favourite would be Hidan no Aria.

To be honest,I watched it just because Ms. Kugimiya was the lead seiyu (Toradora!,Zero no Tsukaima,Astarotte no Omocha!,Shana)
The action scenes were also pretty well-transitioned,lots of different characters (not much development as you would think).
Only thing that threw it off was the whole harem vibe it gave off

AnoHana.

The animation was pretty damn good, lots of picturesque settings as well.
Just like you said (h),they seemed to try too hard to deliver.Usually I wouldn't mind if it still turned out well, but from the second to last episode it was clear that wasn't the case.Wasn't even motivated to watch the ending

Top pick for Cookie-cutter genre would be Mayo Chiki!.

Read the manga before though,so had an idea where the plot would go.One thing I'd give them credit for was the (written) scene transitions.(Also,Usami)

Top Slice of Life: Nichijou

The art style alone had me.Some of the running gags got a bit repetitive though.

Anime planned to watch:
Ro Kyu Bo!
Usagi Drop - Read the manga,it was a great slice of life
Gosick - The shonen tag,and that OP threw me off.
That.damn.OP.

mirai nikki. Probably the only anime i have watched except astro boy, if that even counts.

I don't know why really, few of the episodes are good. But to be one hundred percent honest, their
relationship is cute. And so i watch. 0_0

like that.

why do people like steins gate? i thought it was somehwat mediocre for most of it and only watched it to finish it. I would have to vote for 2011 Madoka. I also, really enjoyed Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko. There were a lot of new shows that I thought were fun and really enjoyed but I cant really rank…

My top favorites were definitely Madoka and Nichijou. AnoHana was aiiiight. Mirai Nikki is coming out to be alright too, but some of the episodes in the middle have just seemed like pointless filler and retardation. Hopefully they wrap it off nicely. I haven't watched Penguindrum, yet but it seemed just out there enough to be interesting. Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko is one I hadn't even considered though. Guess I'll give that one a shot.

Tiger & Bunny, and Madoka were the only ones I liked that came out in 2011.
I don't watch moe crap so those are really my only two options.
