Small update: the yeast is definitely working, seeing as we've had a bit of an eruption. But don't worry, everything was cleaned up and disinfected. There shouldn't be any further flare-ups.

Having tried brewing but creating a horribly disgusting brown mess, protect your brew from light. it does affect taste and how it looks.

Yeast remains fizzing healthily. But the smell of the urine wine has changed. From a distinct yeasty urine odor yesterday, it has developed an almost apple cider characteristic. There is still faint underlying urine aromas, though.

Hey, I've come this far, so I'll taste it for sure. I smelled it again and, believe it or not, if I hadn't pissed in the bottle myself, I don't think I would be able to guess it was urine. Sharp apple notes with a sweet yeasty smell that has become less astringent and almost pleasing to the nose. Once the yeast starts to die off with the increasing alcohol content (I can smell some alcohol already), I'll give it a ballza swig.

You should have poked a few holes in the top of the bottle, that would allow the carbon dioxide produced from the fermentation to vent, and not build up in the bottle resulting in an eruption. This is a great thread though, and I applaud what you are doing. As a home brewer myself I'm very interested in this. The process of fermentation is in reality way more complicated than most people believe. Most of the flavor of an alcoholic beverage comes from complex chemical reactions that occur on certain compounds during the fermentation process. Who knows, maybe the process of fermentation does crazy shit to the chemicals in your piss.

Also what is your diet like? Would your piss contain chemicals that most people's would not? Do you take drugs regularly?

I did perforate the lid with holes as well as loosely placing the cap back on. The size and shape of the bottle combined with the amount of urine, how much sugar and yeast added, would have probably caused spillage regardless. Luckily, after the initial explosion, things don't get that intense again.

And my recent diet has been pescetarian. I do not drink alcohol regularly and no drugs, prescription or illicit. I recently quit an antidepressant that would have been excreted renally (peepee), but I checked and there would not be any residual in my system.

Your method would still allow for contamination. Any serious brewer uses at least a water lock. In any case, given the brevity of the experiment, serious bacterial contamination is negligible, even with a few pin-holes in the cap.

So, the fermentation is dying down ahead of my predicted schedule and the dead yeast is collecting at the bottom. The urine wine may be done as early as tomorrow or the day after. The smell now is rather pleasant with no urine undertones left. There are also no discernable off-notes that you'd find in a contaminated home brew.

Once it's finished, I'll record the tasting and review video.

Oh right, I'm not used to brewing in plastic bottles, I usually use proper fermentation locks. I think I've seen some people use a balloon with holes as a replacement. The idea is that as the carbon dioxide is produced it will slowly and steadily vent through the holes, thus not allowing outside air to seep in while fermentation is happening. I think people use balloons because once the fermentation is done the balloon will deflate and half-ass seal the holes poked in it. Fermentation locks work under the same principle, basically, just with water. The pressure inside the fermentation vessel effectively pushes the carbon dioxide through the water, and out the other side. While the pressure on the outside of the lock isn't strong enough to push air through the lock into the vessel.

I'm sorry, guys. I went into this thinking if I mess up, I can just do retake, but I was so wrong. While it easily has at least 10% alcohol, it is hands-down the most foul thing I've ever tasted. It smelled actually floral-like. But, the first take sucked. I can't do it again.
