Real heavy Cold War shit was going on in Italy from the 60s through the 80s. These were the Years of Lead, a mess of killings between radical communists and radical fascists. There's no way to know what exactly happened because of the immense amount of shady deals going on.

The modern P2 was formed in the 1960s, right before the Years of Lead began. Various members of P2 were politicians and government workers, including members of the Italian secret services. Licio Gelli, who established the lodge, wanted it to be a fascist shadow government. P2 has been implicated in corruption and terrorism. Many members have also be associated with Operation Gladio, a NATO and CIA stay-behind operation designed to leave resistance in the country in case of Soviet invasion. Gelli was eventually sentenced to 8 years for funding terrorist activity.
