I had something weird happen to me a while ago and I'm wondering if anyone else ever experienced anything like this.

I was reading up some of the scariest moments in horror movie history, and I stumbled upon the The Blair Witch Project and Jacob's Ladder. I watched what were supposed to be the scariest scenes from those movies. I looked up the ending to Blair Witch, the part where the girl with the camera just keeps screaming for some reason, and then she goes to the basement to find her friend standing in the corner. Then I watched the hospital scene in Jacob's Ladder, and I saw the part where the torso with a bag over its head was shaking its head back and forth at the speed of light while making this really weird sound like wind blowing.

After that, I sat in my room with my back against the corner, staring intently at my door even though my family was home. There was this feeling of foreboding looming over me, and I had never been so scared in my entire life. I tried to leave my room as little as possible the next few weeks, and the worst part of my day became coming back home from school. I would dread that moment from early morning all the way up until the end of the last class. I was always looking over my shoulder or listening for unusual noises. Sometimes when I went out to the garage, I would imagine that torso from Jacob's ladder sitting in the back seat of my car, twitching violently and watching me. It was the weirdest thing that ever happened; it was just absolute fear for no reason for like two or three weeks straight. Can anyone relate or explain?

It's fear - just fear. You've developed an irrational fear of things you've seen or heard of (that are, granted, both pretty awesome and pretty freaky). There's nothing paranormal about it, though it does demonstrate that the things you saw were pretty well done.

There's two paths for you at this point. The first is the cure. To cure this at night keep the night light on and sleep with a TV or radio on until everything is fine and stay away from anything too scary for a while. Watch lots of comedies. You'll be fine...

or...

There's the path I took along with most /x/philes. Look up more horrifying things. Keep going, follow this fear. I don't sleep at night because I know things. I know legends. I know myths, folklore, stories, things that make Jacob's Ladder look like a comedy.

Understand this. Choose the first path and your life will return to normal and you'll occasionally enjoy horror movies. Continue down the path of insanity and you'll learn more, things most people don't believe in or take into account. Your choice. Make it now.

It's just plain paranoia. I had this too when I was a child and watched my first horror movies.
It wears off after time and now I'm pretty much immune to creepy shit.

I'm not trolling, but I'm afraid of dark. I've seen too many nightmares where something is lurking in the dark, and in some occasions these creatures have caught me and prevented me from escaping. How long does it take for this fear to wear off, or will I have to be more active in confronting my fears? Recently the source fueling my fears might be that I'm not 100% sure if ghosts don't exist.

ghosts may or may not exist... but dont think about it and you will be fine. The one thing i learned from my time in the jungle in the army is that if you hear or see something that isint supposed to be there then shut up and dont disturb it. Dont touch it and it wont touch you.

I'm afraid of the dark too. I can't remember the last time I slept somewhere with all the lights off. I actually know people that like completely pitch black rooms and I can't understand it at all. Also, I don't remember that scene in the Blair Witch Project but it sounds terrifying so I definitely need to watch it again. The scene in Jacob's ladder, though, I know what you mean, OP. I think both of them are particularly effective as horror devices because they're incredibly threatening and full of foreboding. It's not like something jumping out at you that you can physically defend yourself, it's like something trying to drive you insane almost.

But yeah, anyway, I tend to do things like this too and I think it has to do with pushing our minds to see what we can and can't cope with and how we would deal with our worst case scenarios in reality. Probably the major purpose of imagination and quite psychologically healthy if anything.

There's nothing scary about a room being dark, it's not like the darkness summons monsters. The lights are just turned off. People didn't have lighting in their houses for a long ass time, and we made it then.

Why does the possibility of ghosts make you afraid of the dark? You think a ghost gives a shit if your room is dark? They're going to do whatever they want anyway if they exist. It's pointless to fear ghosts anyway, because it's not like you can do anything about them.

Yeah, I definitely can't hope of sleeping in a room that isn't pitch-black. Any light at all just seems to drill through my eyelids and prevent any rest whatsoever. I work nights, the only lights in my apartment that see regular use are in the bathroom and refrigerator.

Think of it like this, man - in an utterly dark environment, for all practical purposes you're invisible. As long as you don't breath like an ox in heat, nothing can know you're there. You think the Blair Witch would've found those deliciously vulnerable teenagers if they didn't have their camera lights and shit on all the time? Fuck no, man. In a pitch-black room, You're the ghost.

Hope that helps.

I watched The Ring and didn't find it really scary at all, and I've played FEAR, but for a year or two, I would be afraid of walking down dark halls and looking at mirrors when it was late at night, for fear of being seen by a ghost girl.

The Japanese films (all 4 of them) were better. This is actually a specific kind of ghost called an onyro, where originally it was a stock character of a woman who was wronged by a man (then killed, usually, or suicide) then she comes back as a vengeful spirit. Films like Ring and Ju-On brought the idea back, though Ring was more true to the source material bringing the character into a modern setting while Ju-On modernized the character and put it in a stock setting.

You might light Ju-On, try it out then Ju-On 2 which is generally agreed upon to be superior and scarier than the first one.

Oh man what was that horror film from asia about like the ghost lady that was riding on people's backs and killing them, cause she got raped or somthin? and then in the end the guy gets thrown out the window by the ghost chick but he lives, and then you see her like on his shoulders through a reflection and it's like OOOO SHIT

Listen to this guy, (or gal, not imposing roles on anyone here) he (or she) knows what is what.

When I was really young, and got my first TV in my room I saw that Evil Dead 2 was on, and had heard in school how awesome it was by some older kids.
I tried watching it, but couldn't watch past the scene where Ash's girlfriend comes back and dances in the woods then skips away. My house had (its been chopped down) a small area of woodland surrounding it I used to play in. For 3 months after seeing that I wouldn't set foot in the woods.
Since then I have had an irrational fear of stop motion animation because of how unnatural it is, but as I have gotten older I have learned to love horror films and have a great interest in strange paranormal things, especially demonology, hauntings and also violent crimes.
Evil Dead 2 is now one of my all time favourite films, and as I am older I can now watch it as it should be watched, the 3 Stooges with a feck load of gore.
so yea, >>6901 is right. Either cure yourself and make yourself believe that all is fine (and it is, this is just your mind playing tricks).
Or embrace the weird and learn to enjoy being scared out of your mind.
Also >>7441 I agree, everyone in my school raved about the ring when it came out saying how scary it was, I think I have been more scared watching a kitten sleep.
I did find the Grudge creepy, and do want to watch Ju-On, but I have to be in a particular mood to watch a foreign film (especially if subtitled).
But I also recommend Noroi: The Curse as a great Japanese horror film, and its done on hand cam as a mocumentary but it is done well.

If you people think any of those are bad, you should play Amnesia: The Dark Descent.

I wasn't impressed by Fear, I watched Blair Witch, Ju-On, Ring-o, and their american counterparts with amusement, not even the slightest tremor.

Amnesia makes me scream and piss myself.
Still haven't finished it either.

Well I don't know if this has to be just some real stuff going on or just my mind playing tricks on me. I was asleep and Early in the morning I woke up but fell almost back asleep. my right eye was closed but my left eye was half open. While I was falling back asleep. out of no where I saw a girl with white ragged clothing and long black hair and could not see her face. I saw this with my left half opened eye. She grabbed my through and I felt it, Honest to god i felt her grabbing my through the split second she did i woke up screaming and punching at the air. Ever since then I have been wondering what that ment. Some one please explain this to me.

After playing through Amnesia: The Dark Descent through an entire night and into the wee hours of the morning, and then failing to sleep for a second night, I experienced some trippy shit similar to what OP got, but likely worse.
Extremely well made (and scary as shit) game + surround sound + lack of sleep = fuck.

It's almost as if you're feeding on the fear a little. Remember that we do nothing without a reward system and while you may feel afraid, I detect a touch of exhilaration...which is why you keep indulging it.

Dopamine, epinephrine, etc...you enjoy them like we all do. I ride rollercoasters, you scare the shit out of yourself off horror films.

I finally decided to watch Jacob's Ladder after much procrastination.
It wasn't that good. At all.
