I would consider it a factor of the 2,500 HK416 and SCAR-L expense and build quality than anything else. I get the impression that a Noveske N4 would keep up with the aforementioned rifles just as well.
My argument for why the piston fad is bullshit is this: You don't remove carbon build up. You simply move it from one place to another at the price of a sharper recoil. Carbon is still going to build up around the piston and in the breech no matter what you do. Guns like the G-3 can be incredibly difficult to clean and have residue buildup where many armchair commandos would argue that there should be none.
tl;dr: all guns shit themselves. All that changes is where they shit themselves. They all need to be cleaned and maintained.
The cleaning instructions for the almighty reliable AK-47 translated from the Russian Manual:
"The weapon is cleaned at the following times:
Daily if in combat, on maneuvers or extensive training in field.
Immediately after detail or training.
Immediately after firing service or blank ammunition. The weapon must be cleaned immediately after firing using alkali solution, and the gun grease must be applied to bore, gas cylinder, gas cylinder tube, piston and bolt.
The weapon must be cleaned upon returning to the unit, and cleaned the following three or four days.
The weapon must be cleaned not less than once every seven days if not in use."
