you know, recently i have been in a gun mood. maybe it's because i just found out what the WBC is... maybe it's because i airsoft too much... maybe it's because i cleaned all my guns this week... who knows? well i came here today to ask if anyone else is at all hyped up about this gun?

http://www.magpul.com/pdfs/PDRtech_PR.pdf

i saw it, of course, while my brother was playing the new Battlefield 3 game BETA, and i fell in love with the concept. a compact p90-sized bullpup rifle with a standard military magazine and ammo type. and who else other that magpul to make it. i'm hooked. i want this gun so bad.

ITT: also, feel free to post any other practical prototype firearms that you guys are hyped up about.

In all likelihood, the PDR will never exist.

Bullpups have a few minor disadvantages. Reloading can sometimes be a little cumbersome, more difficult to fire prone, etc.

Not to mention trigger pull is ruined.

True, but it's not as big of a deal as with pistols.

Trigger pull is always a big deal.

I think he's trying to classify autoloaders as bullpup...

A bullpup is no more difficult to fire prone than a regular rifle using the same magazines. It doesn't matter in this case, because the PDR is intended to be used with 20 round magazines. You can use 30 rounders, but 20 round mags just work better with the whole PDW thing, because they're handier.

Exactly. The manufacturer had to shorten the standard magazine size so it wouldn't be a problem. With a non-bullpup rifle, you wouldn't have to do that. It's the same with trigger pull. The AUG has a lot of fancy stuff done to the trigger assembly to make the trigger a little smoother, but in a non-bullpup rifle, none of that has to be done. The only thing the bullpup design has going for it is the longer barrel, shorter profile. But with that comes a lot of little disadvantages, that add up.

Overall this looks neat. But I have a few issues with it:
1. If they really wanted to keep size down they'd drop the rail for an integrated optic/sights. Adding the height of the rail plus flip up irons really adds to the height and time required to deploy (if flip up sights like in OP are used) what is supposed to be a compact and fast weapon. Being that this is Magpul, I'm not surprised.

2. This thing is going to be LOUD. Very short barrel with the bolt right next to your head firing rifle ammo is going to put out a loud flash and big bang. This may or may not be an issue.

I don't want this to get completely off topic into a thread on the merits of bullpups, but in this weapon and role it really should be a bullpup. If the magazine and trigger group were located ahead of the trigger/grip you'd be wasting space in the buttstock, and would have a MUCH shorter barrel unless you increase the overall length of the weapon. Weapons in this role need to be small, maneuverable, and powerful enough to kill at reasonable engagement ranges. You could not keep a weapon like this as small as it is without giving up at least one of the following: barrel length, muzzle velocity, or size. For service rifles that's fine, but for a PDW concealability and handling/ease of access in tight quarters are critical. It's telling that neither two most popular PDW's currently on the market, the P90 or the MP7 are set up with the magazine ahead of trigger. I'm not a huge fan of bullpup rifles myself, but for weapons with these requirements it really shouldn't be avoided.

The 20 round magazine is to make the weapon more convenient to carry. This has nothing to do with whether or not the weapon is bullpup, because the magazine sticks out the same amount regardless.
