1807 No. 1807
I recently got my hands on a couple cheap thrift store keyboards and I've found them to be very inspiring musical instruments, tons of fun to mess around with, and surprisingly versatile in a "serious" musical context.

I'm curious about artists who make use of toy keyboards, old Casios, etc. Any recommendations are welcome, but I'm particularly interested in artists and songs that use cheap shitty keyboards in a very prominent way, ideally as the central component in their music. Some examples:
Chad van Gaalen:

Holy Fuck:

Dan Deacon

And I recently read an interview with Matthewdavid where he says he uses a Casio SK-1 on "everything." In this song in particular, you can hear a lot of SK-1 stock sounds: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uPCWBQYUb3E

Any other artists who center their work around these kinds of keyboards?

Dude just google freak folk/circuit bending/chiptunes

Those are all very wide terms. Why not tell >>1785 to google "retro music videos" or >>1605 to google "cover songs" or >>1582 to google mashups? The whole point of this board is to exchange and discuss music, so I'm inviting sharing and discussion from individual users of music that involves old keyboards.

They're actually pretty limited

I meant "wide" as in there are a ton of artists in each of those respective subgenres. I'm familiar with chiptunes, not generally a fan of freakfolk, and have friends into circuit bending. Once again, I posted this thread because I am interested in recommendations from individuals here, and discussion of specific artists.

See how good a version of this you can play on the sk-5 OP.

That would be super fun. With a reverb pedal, a low-pass filter, a multi-phrase looper of some kind (RC-30 or something), and some creative sampling with the SK-5's sample pads, I think a really fun take on this could be made. Doing it on the fly would obviously be extremely difficult, but recording it layer by layer could yield some cool results.

  Small Black with an SK-5.

I could not agree more. A good live-looping act is really fun to watch/listen to.

I recently got a Boss RC-3 from Craigslist and I cannot think of a better tool for generating strange melodic ideas.
