Is it possible to burn fat through just strength training (e.g. press-ups, squats, etc), or is it necessary to do cardio?

how much fat are we talking about?

I tend to go against the *chan hive mind about weightlifting anyway. I say if you are a fatty trying to lose a lot of weight, focus on diet and cardio, first and formost. That shit is hard enough and keeps a "new to fitness lifestyle" persons goals small enough to achieve. Weightlifting is body shaping. you gotta get the body thin enough to shape it first. If you want to lose weight, eat 1500 calories a day of balanced meals, learn about nutrition, and R-U-N. R-U-N everyday. That is plenty for most people to take on right there. Hell most people fail at even that. After you can do those things, then, someone can adjust to adding in weightlifting to their new lifestyle. Regardless of what the chans tell you, weightlifting won't make you thin fatty. And if you are thin enough to start weightlifting, then you should all ready be able to answer your own question.

But hey, you do what ever you want

I'm not fat, but I wouldn't call myself thin or scrawny either. I'm about 5'11" in terms of height and weigh around 145lbs. I think my current body type is what people refer to as "skinnyfat", though with perhaps a bit more muscle.

It's just that I find it really hard to motivate myself to go outside for a run somewhere, especially when it's winter like it is now, and I've been almost completely inactive for months because of it. I find it much easier to motivate myself to do press-ups, squats, knee tucks and things of that nature, since I can just do them in the comfort (and warmth) of my own home.

I have a bit of fat left that I'd like to lose, but I'm wondering if I can accomplish that without doing cardio, while simultaneously building muscle mass. I'm not in any rush, so I don't mind if the progress is slow, I'm just wondering if it's even possible.

take this one guys opinion, ymmv, my 2 cents, for what it's worth, etc.

what you are proposing is difficult to achieve. firstly, I assume we are talking about the bellyfat here. losing that last bit of bodyfat around the midsection is the hardest part of them all. I'm not talking about you, but fattys in general, have no idea that losing the first 20-30, whatever pounds; is rip shit easy compared to the last bit of roll on the gut. It takes time and dedication. So much so, that it can be frustrating as hell. For myself, I recall a lot of nightly cursing around this. Secondly you say "while simultaneously building muscle mass" which imo is contrary to cutting. What generally happens is more like building definition than gaining mass.

My suggestions would be deep calorie deficit, nearly zero carbs, (watch out for hemorrhoids, get lots of water and high fiber fruits like apples, and such). I dont know shit about it, but check out The Zone diet. That kind of dedication to diets a mutherfucker though man. And indoor cardio/calisthenics like, do lots of jumping jacks, jumping rope, running in place, fast pace push ups and sit ups, that kind of stuff. Also maybe some aerobics dvds, they're not just for grandmas, some of those things'll kick your ass. Speaking of, you might be perfect for p90x or Insanity. Do these along with whatever program youre currently doing or incorporate them into what your doing now

I hope any of that helps and good luck mate. Stay dedicated and eventually you'll get there.

Want to loose weight; take the fork out of your mouth. Problems of the first world we have to deal with.

I'm not going to bother reading through this whole thing, but I will give it to you simply.
>burn fat through weight training
Yes. But it doesn't make a huge difference
>without cardio
Yes. But you have to eat exactly how much your calories need and no more. And based on my experience- it won't look as good if you don't do cardio

you definitely can. But generally people subdivide their goals into bulking and cutting, building up a good base of muscle than honing away the fat. To do this you have to understand how much you need to eat to sustain your body weight, how much protein you need to gain muscle, and how much protein you need to sustain that muscle.

Figures I've seen are ~1.5g per kg of body mass per day for bulking and ~1g per kg per day for maintenance. Try to keep protein consumption fairly consistent if you are bulking, 2hr gaps between small meals is ideal
