How do you deal with growing older?

Sometimes, it just feels like the younger someone is, the more they are worth in the eyes of society.

Prime example of a joke that makes me feel like piss:

an 18 year old woman is like a soccer ball: 22 men are fighting over her

a 25 year old woman is like a hockey puck, 10 men are fighting over her

a 38 year old woman is like a golf ball, 1 man is chasing her

a 48 year old woman is like a ping pong ball, 2 men try to keep her away from them

a 58 year old woman is like a cannon ball, men try to save themselves from her attacks!

And it's not just beauty, either. When a kid does something, it is likely to get more attention than when someone older does the same. Sure, it makes sense, but it is depressing nonetheless.

When a pretty 16 years old white girl commits suicide, the world shits its pants-- but when a 48 years old black man does it, nobody cares.

And then there's the fact that people you love will get sick and die. If you live to be a hundred years old, you'll have to watch the slow physical decay and death of your parents, many of your friends and possibly even your lover. When I think of the future, I think of illness and death and it makes me sick.

Care to elaborate? It sounds like you've got a specific quote in mind, because Buddhism is a pretty broad answer.

tech and medicine are changing. And most rules I've found like this I've seen plenty of contradictions of... just very few in my favour (you're depressed, confirmation/cognitive bias - fuck off, that's adhominem in another hat. feels real == real enough)

I try to stick to my ideals - the body is just clothes we wear, and new repair ideas pop up all the time. shame life is frequently disappointing, but hey, maybe it works out sometimes; all it takes is one that works.

I've had people tell me that I'm idiotic because I'm young while I pop off ideas that in retrospect turned out to be world-changing when someone with education, connections and investors/money pulled it off. "Well yours wasn't worth anything because you're young and unconnected." "Thanks, Mom. Thanks, step-dad and dad. You just... you just keep doing what you're doing."

Likewise I've seen kids with fewer waking issues than me pull off shit I've been trying to do for years and everyone applaud, after I do something that might be an analogue, and everyone just snorts and rolls their eyes, like, 'oh, there's the resident bitch going off on his shit again.'

The only rule of society, it seems, is that there are no rules, and everyone's playing games rather than buildin' good things for everyone's benefit. A large part of society is inconsistent(-seeming?) jerkwaddery.

Also, depending on the quality of your men, >2927 could mean _anything_.

Scientifically, there are only three broad types of coping strategies:

•appraisal-focused: Directed towards challenging one's own assumptions, adaptive cognitive
•problem-focused: Directed towards reducing or eliminating a stressor, adaptive behavioral
•emotion-focused: Directed towards changing one's own emotional reaction

there are also maladaptive coping or non-coping. When they are practiced enough to become a habit, people are considered to have realised a disorder of some kind – from personality disorder to anxiety disorder.

So what are you going to do? Stop assuming that young people are valued more? Stop considering it a problem and see it as your less of a commodity and more of a subject now? Or be thrilled that you discovered this little gem of insight and feel happy that you're becoming more socially aware?

"Worth" is an interesting concept. Young people are viewed as untrustworthy and under-intelligent; we hire 18-year-olds to wash dishes and bus tables, we hire twentysomethings to wait tables, and in your thirties you finally can be treated like you might have some talent—but by then you're disheartened and tired of life.

Women get the short end of this stick, to be sure, but that's really only because our culture allows women to be reduced to only one criterion for "value," that being their attractiveness. It's shitty and it's going to have to stop eventually.

Aging is a terrifying concept due to our neverending hurtle towards death, sure, but enjoy the ride.

Thanks for letting a 23 year old feel this unwanted feel.

Getting older is awesome I don't know what the fuck you're on about. I was retarded in my 20s. I'm still retarded but I'm in the middle of it so I just don't realize it yet.

I post practice exercises based on my own medical history on the neurology board for that studentdoctor forum pretending to be an old and wise neurosurgeon. It makes me respect age by seeing how easily young people can be tricked

23 is still very much young. I'm 30, but don't feel old. Change your mindset. Hell, 30 is still not that old. I haven't even reached the halfway point of the average life expectancy.

But, to the OP, you just deal with it. I cared a lot more about age when I was younger. Now, it's a non-issue. If I could have changed one thing regarding this whole issue, it would be to tell my younger stuff to stop worrying about something you can't change and just live life.
