What the fuck is the point of gift cards? Why not just give people money they can spend wherever they want?
>> No. 76447
Why not just replace all gifts with money? Giving someone cash kinda defeats the point of gift-giving. Gift cards were created as a compromise, you're still giving them a gift but you're not forcing a particular item down their throat.

Though it does seem a bit silly. Stores naturally advertise their cards like crazy because you're forcing all 50 of those dollars to be spent in store. And people very rarely use the whole balance, so they can collect on the diff.

Why isn't money considered the ultimate gift, anyways? It's a wildcard, it lets you buy whatever you want.

Because people are naturally social animals we want to make every event into something more sociable. Giving gifts isn't just some gesture of generosity, it's a test to see how well you know someone. Giving a thoughtful gift that someone actually likes is a sign that you know them well.

This is why I tend to be hesitant about giving gifts at times of obligation (birthday, xmas, etc.) and prefer to give gifts spontaneously when I see something that reminds me of someone or I that I think they would like or they explicitly said that they want it. Usually these are just small things - last time I did it was in the summer and it was a thrift store watercolor kit for my girlfriend. In the past I've given friends records and little statues and books, booze, that kind of thing.

I still get people things at Christmas and usually on birthdays but I have had standing agreements with every girl I've dated in the past that I don't like Valentine's Day and that I'll buy them something when it means something and I'm thinking of them, not because I'm supposed to.

because with just cash there's a ballza chance it will be spent on something that isn't meaningful in any way. with a gift card you can at least make sure it's spent on something they like. force them to enjoy themselves with it.

When people give me cash I usually spend it on drugs or video games and I enjoy myself very much with them.

What type of drugs or videogames?

For most non-sex workers the amount of cash they'll get as gifts would be able to get used video games and shitty drugs, but not much more than that.

That means that if >>76469 says anything fancier than "a pile of NES carts I saw on eBay and a bag heavily cut with oregano" then >>76469 is a ho.
