Because that's not what it's damn for. The membranes in your nose are much more sensitive so they can pick up smells. Smells tend to be just traces of a thing instead of the actual thing in your face. That's why pepper is nice when you put it in your mouth and very not-nice when you put it in your nose. For some reason or another, we evolved a flappy flap below both our nose and mouth so that we are able to both eat and breath using the mouth, which is handy when the nose is plugged or otherwise out of commission. That flappy flap flaps based on whether your are swallowing or breathing. Just because technically you can shove something through your nose and swallow it doesn't mean it should feel ballza.

Saliva plays a big part in digestion and helping the bolus to slide down the throat.
