99chan, in an effort to increase speed, user experience and security is thinking about moving to a new non-shit platform called TinyIB. This will look essentially the same, act essentially the same but work much more smoothly.

I suppose I am asking, what do you think of archiving this particular instance of 99chan and starting anew with few boards (10 max initially) and moving from there.

Opinions? Please, do give your opinions.

A lot of existing boards are dead because they still have some subject overlap, and because we have like 150 users spread over as many boards. If I want to talk about the philosophy of language, should I post it in /speak/ or /phi/? Or what about if I want to talk about NES emulation, should I post it in /tvav/ or /lego/? Not to mention 99channers are a bunch of pacifist liberal hippies, why do we even have /w/? The one post every 6 months that board gets could just go on /b/.

The boards were combined in kind of a dumb way last time that still left a lot of overlap and a lot of dead boards. The way I suggested mostly takes care of that. If /tvav/, /lit/, /sfcsp/, and /mu/ each get one post a month, but you combine them into one board, then now /media/ is getting 4 posts a month, that's a 400% increase in posting speed.

Although, don't get rid of anything, can't you just snapshot the board as it is now and make it read-only at 99chan.org/archive or something?
>> No. 74501
In some ways I've liked the idea of having one board for all discussion, at least. Porn boards can still be separate. I like anime but I feel like I can't talk about it on /b/ because it belongs in /a/, but no one goes to /a/ so it's pointless to post there. I don't think merging a few boards will hellza fix this problem, but just having a broad /media/ board might work or something.

Take a look guys, https://99chan.org/beta it is nearing completion. I worked out the bug with migration to the new platform and was successful in moving all content (excluding bans :( :( )

The theme will be paisley, I won't switch them over until I know for sure it all works, it looks at least 95% like original legacy 99chan and can assure stability. Please continue to use this site of course, when we swap we will synchronize the boards so nothing will be lost. Thanks for the advise, support and incite to all.

I will work on the theme with help from IRC users and will work on other nick nacks. Please try test posting on the other site, it'd be helpful. Test is, shit on it, try to hack it, etc. Lets see if this move will be productive :)

We need to switch it up on this sanctuary, give the users something a bit more stable and a bit more easily used.

I am in favor of cutting boards down to the absolute minimum and tossing the old threads wherever they might fit so that discussions can continue. The full on board holocausts from site fuck ups in the past haven't been that bad, and I think they are needed like a forest needs a fire. The community changes and loses interest in segments which accumulates dead boards, so start with the minimum and build up based on demand. Doing something like monthly trial boards would be a ballza idea, because we'd get suggestions on what people want now and would give a reason to get some seed posts as trial boards are use it or lose it.

Thanks for all the hard work and love you are putting in to the site.

I have mixed feelings on the "clean slate" thing - on the one hand it seems like every time a site-wide wipe has happened, it has had a negative effect on posting speed and the size of the userbase. On the other hand, I feel like if a wipe was done in conjunction with well thought out, strategic board consolidation, it could de-clutter the site (which feels a quite cluttered with dead threads to me and that has an impact on the site's aesthetic appeal) and provide a chance to restart the newly consolidated boards with exciting content that people are into.

>>74492
This is a great starting point, IMO. Keep /hor/ though.

With the creativity board, you'd need to make sure to have a sticky that specifies that that page is for content creation of all kinds, including visual art, writing, MSPaint, etc.

As far as being "invaded" by /pol/ goes, I think you're right when you say if it was going to happen, it would have happened to the dedicated extreme ideology boards. I think when it comes to 4 big dicks up my asshole /pol/ shitposters, half the fun for them is shitting all over a "serious" board and they have no interest in posting seriously on a board dedicated to nazi ideology; they want to get a rise out of people and you won't get a rise out of anyone on a board like /reich/ or a board like the proposed /ac/ that has threads for that sort of discussion and a moderator that makes sure discussions of white supremacy or neo-nazi ideology stay academically focused and don't turn into "hurr dum nigers." If it becomes anything close to a problem on an /ac/ademics board, just made a dedicated nazi thread and ban people for posting outside of it or, if it gets hellza bad, recreate /reich/ as need dictates.
>> No. 74513
Also, an /ac/ademics board would allow discussion of things that don't currently have a home. If I want to talk about history, where would I post? But if there is just a broad /ac/, I can post there. And maybe while I'm there to post about Charles Sumner or whatever, I will scroll past a philosophy thread and have something to say, where I would not have encountered that thread had it been on a niche philosophy board.

Maybe in the board list have a "99chan University" sublist - /ac/ for soft sciences like history, philosophy, and politics; and /stem/ for mathematics, programming, and technology discussion. You could ban people on /stem/ with (USER WAS FOUND TO NOT HAVE AUTISM)

Discussions of literature could go in either /media/ or /ac/ depending on context, the type of discussion desired, or the book in question.

/b/ can be transferred as is, consolidation boards can be populated with cherry picked threads from their constituents to set the atmosphere.

Boards need to be axed and we need a more active userbase, not strictly a larger one. Don't grovel on reddit for new users again, please.

Some boards were limping along because of old conversations that kept bumping. Once those were axed, nobody had any reason to post on there anymore.

How many dream threads get posted on /docta/? Maybe someone who wants to post/read about dreams doesn't want to have to sort through endless rants about sexual dysfunction.

If any of us cared about speed we would have been long gone by now.

Typically, those things happen as some kind of a bandaid for bleeding traffic after a disaster like the joker wipe or the domain seizure. Just saying, it's a correlation/causation kind of a thing. Also, the deleted boards decision had some discretion involved, but the main rule was that they weren't even on the chopping block unless the last post was 2 months old or older. It's always a shame, but to have a /dream/ board, people need to want to post about dreams, and they aren't doing it now or then.

Actually, let me lay some cards on the table here. Incoming tldr.

The deletion wasn't hellza done for its own sake. It was a means to a more useful end. Problem: board traffic was slow and our moderator list was bloated with inactive irc users/ irc users who only gave a fuck about irc who never even used or had a passion for the imageboard to begin with. Their staff status was a ballza-boy award for looking cool on irc.

Solution: every mod does what Casanova used to do on /docta/ or they lose their credentials. You post, either flagged or unflagged at least once or twice a week so that people see that someone who has a passion for the topic is there replying/guiding/doing the housekeeping. And this worked well actually. Only problem was that after a week it became apparent that we didn't have enough staff that were willing to comply with this 5 minute per week requirement, and so we had to reduce the number of boards in order to not overwhelm everyone. Ones with more than 2 months of dormancy that no one spoke up for in tttm threads were dropped, and it's hard to see the shame in it.

The whole idea worked well and the required modposting did actually encourage regular users. You can still see a surge around a year ago on these boards if you look carefully at them to this day.

Then the whole thing became defunct when our regular irc drama warp storm happened and a bunch of people got fired/fled and I just said fuck it, I can't keep track of who's being useful if staff status is dependant on irc drama.

So anyway, I know a lot of users would like to be moderators. So instead of irc, I'm going to ask you guys to get involved. If you've been here since 08 and love the imageboard, you'll be better at this and care more about it than an irc user. So if enough people whow some interest here and would like to join up and restart that effort out of love for one or more boards, I will save whatever board you want with you at the helm. You get a banhammer and who hasn't wanted to try one out from time to time. If that interests you, come on irc and ask for wharrves.

I hate to be "that guy", guys, but the boards that are "OMG SO 99chan" are the ones that there seem to be too many of.
/tvav/ is already the former boards /film/, /av/, /tg/, /toon/, and /co/ all wrapped up together, but the Reds and Nazis can't find a way to share some board-space?
Nobody knows what /fubot/ even is anymore. After multiple board-wipes without any real explanation of its' purpose to newcomers, and just the barest bit of oral tradition for them to go on, it went from being a silly shit-post board to being religiously bee-centric. It made for quite the social experiment, but I think it's evolved to its' final form already and has hit a dead end.
And /gent/ is just a one-trick pony.
Let's be honest here, when those boards get a post (/cccp/, /reich/, /fubot/, and /gent/), THAT'S when /b/ is missing out on one.

Provided there are people who are willing to take up the task of clearing spam from the dead/purposeless boards though, I don't hellza see that they're hurting anything just by being there, waiting to be used.

Not that I don't think the media boards could use a little restructuring, but I don't think lumping every type of media into one board is an adequate solution. I'd rather see one board handle nostalgia, toons, comics, toys, and possibly videogames and even anime, while another board handles film, tv, audio (non musical), and liturature. One would be like a comics/collectibles shop and the other like a Barnes & Noble in content
>> No. 74592
>>74591
I like this in general, I could easily see splitting the proposed /media/ into "serious" media with films, literature, basically your /barnes&noble/; and for lack of a better word "nerd" media, with western comics & cartoons, toys, nostalgia. I object to including anime for a few reasons though:

1) I feel like it would be better off on its own dedicated "weeb" board along with manga, visual novels, Touhou & doujin games, tokusatsu/super sentai, Vocaloids and the like.
2) It's just begging for jrpg vs wrpg nerdfights and "Corey in the House best anime ever omg" style shitposting.

>audio (non musical)
So like, ASMR and old-timey radio dramas? Or discussion of audio equipment itself? I don't get it.
>> No. 74593
If I can take the liberty to write it up, then so far the proposed board list seems to be something like this:

/b/ - Thomas & Friends
a board for "serious" traditional media, film, literature, tv, music and the like
a board for "lighter" media, something like 4 big dicks up my asshole's /co/ + /tg/ + /lego/, possibly video games as well.
/weeb/ - japshit
/ac/ - academics; soft sciences. philosophy, politics, history, etc. /speak/ also goes here.
/stem/ - science, technology, engineering, math
/oc/(needs a better name imo) - creative arts of all sorts, from mspaint doodles to bronze sculpture
/adv/(maybe?) basically combine /ask/ and /docta/, meatspace problems
/tttm/ - whine at the mods

prons:
/homo/ - gay shit, not including traps
/trap/ - boypussy
/s/ - vaginas and the bags of flesh attached to them
/h/ - hentai, also h-manga and doujinshi
/hg/ - /h/, but for gay shit
/hor/ - camwhores

I'd also propose splitting /hor/ into male camwhores and female camwhores, but I don't know if /hor/ even now gets enough traffic of either sex to warrant it.
>> No. 74594
>>74592
Yeah, like radio-drama, talk-radio stuff, while actually music stuff goes in /mu/. The same audio stuff /tvav/ currently supports discussion of. Technically, discussion of the tech behind radio, itself, is part of /tvav/ right now too though (/av/ having been folded in), so either/or, I guess.

If /mu/ is slow right now (relatively speaking), I don't see why it can't be folded in the "sophisticated" media board for the time being as well though. If music discussion proves itself significant enough for its' own board again then it can split back off at that time. That's how I feel about /a/ too - when it's jumpin', it becomes too big for a comicshop board, just it's NOT jumping right now.
>> No. 74597
>>74592

>2) It's just begging for jrpg vs wrpg nerdfights and "Corey in the House best anime ever omg" style shitposting.

Shitposters are going to shitpost no matter how you split it up. If they want to stir shit up, there's no shortage of inflammatory topics in a /weeb/ only board. The solution to shitposting is better moderation. Once you start handing out bans for "lolol my hemisphere's media is better than your hemisphere's media", people are going to stop and the quality of discussion will raise.

>>74594

Yeah, I'd agree about /mu/ and /anime/ being pushed into other boards for now. If the mods throw together some dedicated "share music!" or "discuss anime!" threads, it should be plenty for now.

I don't think there's much wrong with our current porn board line-up, except that /cd/ and /di/ should be merged, as well and /do/ and /h/ ...and even /y/. All toon porn should get merged until a specific fetishist userbase presents itself as a rivaling force to that of the rest of the porn-toon userbase. Honestly though, all the porn boards are so dead and porn is so easily available nowadays across the net that I have to question the need for any porn boards that aren't in the same vein as /hor/ and /cd/, where the porn is of our userbase itself.

I also disagree with the idea of combining all artistically creative boards into one, similar to my view against one catch-all media board. /fronk/ and /art/ are just NOT the same flavor, the same atmosphere. I can see merging the writers' portion of /wri/ with /art/ for a /create/ board, but I think /fronk/ should remain its' own thing - maybe just an upgrade to /fronk3D/ for doodling ds with play-doh and such too, not just MSPaint.

The way I see it, the total sum of 99chan content can be summed up under the categories of Shit-Shootin', Academia all science, math, and "soft" sciences go here), Lifestyle, Media Resource, Media Creative, and Porn. Now, so far, in terms of how I've been thinking of it, I'm just asking for two Media Resource boards (Comicshop and Barnes&Noble) and two Media Creative boards (Create and Fronk3D). To me it seems at once not much to ask for, as well as a solid start for those categories. Shit, that's fewer boards in total than the number of porn boards I'd accept.

'Leave everything like it is' guy here..
I do want to make another point regarding all the consolidation suggestions (aside from the fact that they wont do shit). Making new names for boards that aren't in common use in chandom creates new/former user confusion. As an example we have a /wri/ board. All the other chans have a /lit/ board. A new or long absent user would not know where the hell /lit/ content was or should go. You can say it's easy enough to figure out, but many may not. And why make it harder for them?

Aw, I love you guys.

Just for a moment here before we shuffle off this old pile and move on to bigger and better things that actually work properly, I think that the creaky floorboards, fuckey doors and stuff make this place feel like home and I for one will miss its shittiness. I almost don't know what I'll do when I click a post number to enter a thread and it actually shows up in the reply field. Maybe we need to put some intentional bugs and garbage into TinyIB and slowly wean ourselves off them. Sprinkle some trash on the girl to make her feel homey. Either way, farewell Aquarius, we thank you.

For the record, I'm not endorsing a /Barnes&Noble/ as an actual board name or anything. Obviously a more intuitive name needs to be developed.

I agree that our board nomenclature needs some work, but /wri/ is /wri/ because the focus is more on writing than reading, and when it was named the name made a lot more sense in opposition to /lit/. The most use anyone was getting from /lit/ was the library sticky though, and since one thread was all that was needed for /lit/'s content, but because we can't stand to get rid of things, the library sticky now resides in /wri/.

Now, if you want to talk about shit that might as well be in another language, our drug board is called /regs/ and the title banner reads "kindly request information".

A lot of these problems are going to be ones that we're hoping to solve with a more active staff as seen >>74545 . We already have applicants from this thread, so we'll see how it goes. That's a pretty ballza idea actually.

It seems like the two of you summarize a dilemma: Consolidate traffic too much and you confuse the hell out of people. I think a middle path here will be best. We'll play with a few things and maybe drop one or two hellza obscure boards, but daisychaining endless topics together probably isn't something we want to keep doing, at least in such a blatant way.

Yeah, another comment on the naming conventions. ballza call. I'd like to note that tinyib shows the board list by default off to the left while you're in, say, /b/. It might not seem like a big deal, but I think it will make a difference.

/alltopics/ - discussion of all topics
/noposting/ - no posting allowed in this board (doing so results in automatic no-read permaban)
/cas/ - casanova fan board. all active posters are required to post an appreciative comment once a week or be banned for one month. casanova must post a "sunday selfie" every sunday in order to give posters something to compliment. if he does not post a sunday selfie, he will be banned for a year

Not quite as long ago, management did indeed audit various departments, found the robots to be poor conversationalists, and determined that departments where everyone was letting machines do the work for them didn't require a manager, let alone an area for human inhabitants. Departments where people actually showed back up to work when the bosses called ended up being merged with each other, with departments where human workers were already productive, both, or even left alone entirely if they became motivated enough.
