I like Dead Animal Guts better as a name than Azure Wave but that's probably just me. Girls will probably be more prone to going to a live show by a guy named Azure Wave; Dead Animal Guts sounds like it would be a crustpunk show.

You've got some interesting sounds going on. I feel like with more time, more songs, and more experimentation, you'll do a better job of integrating and balancing the electronic and acoustic elements of your music. You have some interesting tendencies on both fronts: your acoustic guitar stuff has some decent songwriting and good melodies, and your electronic stuff has some interesting textures. Both have a lot of delicacy and atmosphere. I think if you worked on mixing both your simpler songwriting tendencies and your textural electronic beat tendencies, you will end up with some really moody, subtle, engaging music.

Do you play live or are you planning to in the not-so-distant future? If so, how do you envision that happening? Guitar and laptop or a small sampler or something along those lines? I think you could do some cool shit with live guitar playing and a sampler or laptop running the electronic elements, and your vocal work running through the laptop/sampler for effects, since you seem to use a lot of effects on your voice.

Also, I want to post this here because I feel like this duo might give you some good ideas on ways to incorporate electronic elements into low-key singer-songwriter type music.

op here. thank you so much for your input! yeah honestly im not sure about azure wave either. i guess the name is temporary. i checked out homesick. its a pretty chill song. my main problem with producing music is my damn hard to use recording program that i have on my comp. but i usually just use garage band on my iphone. when i first started making music i used to use garage band on the mac which was, imo, the best and easiest recording program to use. im a dummy so i dont know how to use lots of the features in magix music maker 2013.

but anyway making music is fun and now that i finally have some awesome input, i now know where to focus and what to work on more!

I was expecting so much more from them after the wildly experimental Revelations[...] and the more streamlined but still drenched in atmosphere journey that was Demonoir. I kinda almost wanted them to go the path Mayhem or DsO took, but with their own, unique brand of rifftastic chaos.

It's still a perfectly enjoyable slab of contemporary black metal, but not much more. Like a sedated Hellfire. Sigh.

So what does /mu/ think of Luca Turilli's Rhapsody? I think the split with Rhapsody was a good thing to happen. Rhapsody is awesome, but it had its time. Their most recent album led by Staropoli does not at all reflect what they are/were, and generally I think it sounds too much like generic power metal without much symphony, influenced by bands like Manowar. Then again Turilli was the king of symphony.

I really like LTR's first album - even their non-metal tracks. I'm excited for the new album this fall. They say it's going to found a new (fusion) metal genre: cinematic metal.

Hurry up, Luca, we're waiting impatiently

I facepalmed so hard my palm lines are now permanently tattooed to my retinas. Just pick a random epic orchestral OST form a high-profile hollywood drama/action film and have Malmsteen ejaculate all over it. There. Isn't that pretty much ÜBER EPIC MELODIC SYMPHONIC POWER METHUL already? Cinematic?? Pretentious wankers.

Power Metal is entirely enclosed into five albums, released between 1983 and 1988 by just the two musical projects. Everything that came afterwards is the exact same shit again and again, only in an ever increasingly watered down, overtly overproduced way, chock full of faux epic singing about faux epic themes while guitar wankage and critical levels of keyboard cheesiness ensue.

Melodic Symphonic Power Metal? Fuck off. There's a name for that: Wankcore.

...but hey, that's just, like, my opinion, man.

You're funny.

But isn't this faux epic singing about faux epic themes while guitar wankage and critical levels of keyboard cheesiness ensue exactly what we expect when listening to Power Metal? I mean if the modern-day Power Metal composers simple perturbate/permutate/entropyate the old masters, why shouldn't we enjoy that too? I know that's exactly the reason why I listen to bands like Rhapsody and Pathfinder.

Cinematic metal - or whatever you want to call it - seems to be Turilli's neoclassical approach to Power Metal. Nothing wrong with that, he's just experimenting.

Have another album cover.
>> No. 2034
>>2033
a) I'm not saying you shouldn't enjoy it. That was just my feelings towards the genre.

b) A neoclassical approach to Power Metal is hardly experimental, original or even clever.

c) "But isn't this [...] exactly what we expect when listening to Power Metal?" My point was that what passes for Power Metal today is a caricature of what once was. Unlike most metal subgenres, Power Metal stopped evolving five or six years into its existence and just became more and more a parody of itself. That's what I meant by all that.

But anyway.
>> No. 2035
>>2034
My point is that a music genre, subgenre or simply a band should not have the need to evolve. I've seen a few/a lot of good bands evolve into much worse music than they originally were. A recent example of this is Hammerfall: their last album sounded way more commercial and by consequence somewhat bland and plain. Thank god they are now on hiatus.

But of course, there are also bands that do evolve regardless of whether their evolved style is a global evolution into better/more varied music.

I don't really know where I'm going with this, but in my opinion once a band has established a certain style of music, I expect all of their music to be in that same style. Also, labeling music is hard and should not be taken seriously.

Speaking of metal, I recently started to listening...yeah, I know...deathcore. It sounds horrible, and I can't do it for long, but I feel really good doing it too. It's a huge ego boost for some reason. I feel super confident on it. It's like the flooding of negative stimuli like death and pain and torture and filthy sex and associating it with pleasant music desensitises me to my worldy anxieties. I see a psychologist and psychiatrist regularly and perhaps it's just my fucked up mind making the connections but I think deathcore could be the new exposure therapy. Start with Postmortem Promises which I currently like and work your work on from there. Ps, I still don't know what the lyrics are for anything I've heard, but the album art is what is disgusting.

Can we seriously have a thread about new music? And I don't just mean new chronologically. You know what I mean, I've made this thread a handful of times.

What's new in music? We're already halfway through 2013. 2003 was a bloody brilliant year, as was 1993 and 1983 and oh my 1973. So, where's our current decade's own, unique input? I'm starting to get really sad at how slow and unimaginative the last five years have been for music. Let's try to remedy this, please.

Pic related, the most original/imaginative/new album I can think of, released this decade (2010).

Antwon still stands - the track "tramp on a jumpoleen" that's crust crunk, and thats new.

And i still contend that Lil B has been a defining influence on hip hop, even if he is an amalgamation of lil jon's repetitivety and Lil Wayn'es ignance, his entire career was created on twitter and youtube, he is the biggest of the myspace rappers.

i feel like these guys are really pushing the envelope towards finding something rare and new. it sounds like a a mixture of everything thats happened in the last 4 years. the first album delves into a genre im pretty sure will eventually exist and take off to become part of the mainstream culture. but not for at least another 6 more years. i would consider them pioneers. second album is more mature tad safer sounding wise but way more pristine. they are looking for something else by sailing through and skipping between genres. i feel the second one is a great mix between acoustic and electric driven. it reminds me of a weird hi fi bjm but at the same time nothing to do with it. i dont know you should def check these guys out.

I like it, but the biggest tip: humanize it. Make every repeating sound slightly different. The looping creepy vocal, make it change position, phase, volume, and/or timing slightly as the song progresses. The tings and tangs, make them not so robotic and digital. Overall I love the use of melody and its a gloomy intermission that keeps almost climaxing but never does. It's so torturous but that makes it good. The way it's timed wouldn't catch onto mainstream stuff as it's too difficult, again this makes it good music. The background vocal texture if used behind a trap or dubstep beat would be an instant hit. Both are targets
>> No. 1887
>>319
By both, I mean both use as-is and use as a background melody to a more "accessible" mainstream sound.
>> No. 1888
It's pretty cool. I don't know if it necessarily needs to be "humanized" but a little more variety in texture would definitely be nice. Plus it could use either some EQ tweaking or a good master because some of the highs went beyond crisp and became piercing. I went to your soundcloud too and that's really the only criticism I have there as well: those highs is too damn shrill sometimes, it wears on me.

Other than that, you have a great ear for sounds and composition. Your songs are generally well balanced. I'm not usually one for the ultra-crisp, ultra-clear digital sound, generally preferring a little more texture but I'm digging the cold feel you have going on here. Despite the generally cold production, you tracks still have a charming character.

On your demo for Krishna, you kind of hint at the textural variety that I'm craving with some of your percussion, especially the handclaps toward the latter half. Oxygen as well has a warmer, rawer feel, probably because of the field recording in the background. Loving the tribal feel on that, as well as the way it builds as different elements are introduced. I was never sure where it was going, if it was going to stay as an ambient piece or move into banging beat territory or first one then the other. Great track.

You create tracks with great depth, and a lot of variety from track to track while still maintaining a pretty unified aesthetic. Nice incorporation of elements of different genres as well, nothing is overdone or feels shoehorned in, it's all distinct, yet it all makes sense together too. Interesting melodies, nice balance of beat-oriented pieces and ambient pieces, great use of reverb (especially on Krishna).

So yeah, for Texas in a Lexus and most of your other stuff, my only criticism is take those highs down a bit, and maybe look into ways you can use compression and filter effects to get a little more variety in texture.

I recently got my hands on a couple cheap thrift store keyboards and I've found them to be very inspiring musical instruments, tons of fun to mess around with, and surprisingly versatile in a "serious" musical context.

I'm curious about artists who make use of toy keyboards, old Casios, etc. Any recommendations are welcome, but I'm particularly interested in artists and songs that use cheap shitty keyboards in a very prominent way, ideally as the central component in their music. Some examples:
Chad van Gaalen:

Holy Fuck:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YmrXkq6W3vU
Dan Deacon

And I recently read an interview with Matthewdavid where he says he uses a Casio SK-1 on "everything." In this song in particular, you can hear a lot of SK-1 stock sounds: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uPCWBQYUb3E

Any other artists who center their work around these kinds of keyboards?

That would be super fun. With a reverb pedal, a low-pass filter, a multi-phrase looper of some kind (RC-30 or something), and some creative sampling with the SK-5's sample pads, I think a really fun take on this could be made. Doing it on the fly would obviously be extremely difficult, but recording it layer by layer could yield some cool results.

I don't know where else to turn, /mu/. I heard this amazing song on the radio the other day, but they didn't say the title/artist and I've had zero luck in my searching for it. All I have are lyrics:

"how many years til the new world is found/is it more than the shells in the Indian mound"

I'm no expert by any means, but it sounded sort of desert/stoner metal-y, but also had some really awesome experimental elements to it. It was maybe 10 minutes long and had multiple changes in key and time signature. The station played it during a block of that sort of music, doom/stoner/whatever metal.

Please help, /mu/. You're my only hope.

Apparently they're all going to be under $150USD, which was surprising to me. I'm not nearly enough of a gear junkie to go out and buy one of these even at that price, but if I was just starting out and looking for affordable hardware or one of those people who fetishizes analog gear, this would be a decent option. They seem very limited as stand-alone "grooveboxes"," not a lot of variety of sonic character and the drums sound pretty weak. But for supplemental synth or drum machine sounds or just having analog gear for dirt cheap they seem like a good option, especially considering that a Moog Slim Phatty will run you $850 and a Dave Smith Tempest will run you like $2k.
