my reasons for loving or hating it depends on the context that I evaluate, if I see this game as a standalone product it's a very good game, if I evaluate the game on the basis of an another product in ac series; it sucks...
ac series is about assasinating people while traversing cities chock full of different cultural ties, with different architectural styles
now tell me how much have you ran on rooftops in 1st game and compare it to the time you have run in ac4
in the latest games it is obviously easier for a person to run on normal ground as rooftops are nearly unaccessible due to huge number of shooters, but I was playing this game due to the ambient it gives me; assasinate, run to rooftops, continue running untill managing to get away
the fact that you saying "melee combat is meh" is problematic in itself; it is an assassin game, if things get to melee combat then it means something went horribly wrong in your plan to kill the person; this game should be about killing discreetly not tearing down door with kicks and punching enemies to death
the question you should ask yourself is; you have gained utmost pleasure from doing what? my answer is messing with ships etc. but the answer to this question is "killing people in a sneaky way" in previous games, do you see the problem in here?
my advice to you while evaluating games is that you first has to look for the focus group of that game in terms of consumers; ac series focuses on (was focusing on) senak/killing etc., now it focuses more and more on ships
this is why for me ac4 is 9/10 if evaluated as a standalone product, but 5/10 if evaluated as a part of ac series
you can see the problem in many vidya game series with continuity problems in core mechanics; supreme commander 1/fa and supcom 2, as a rts (more like real time tactics game) supcom 2 is a good game, but compared to first game it is different, people who played supcom 1 played it due to its different mechanics which are not present in supcom 2 (supcom 2 is more like sc2 game while supcom 1 is total aninhilation-ish) so as like ac4, supcom 2 is 6/10 as a standalone rts, while 2/10 as a continuity game
