The new True Grit...

I wanted to like it so bad. I was excited about the movie coming out. Western and Jeff Bridges? I'm there. In fact I had planned to see it in the theater, but couldn't. I finally saw it on NetFlix... I didn't like it. People keep telling me I was supposed to like it though. I watched almost half of it before declaring it crap and watching something else.

I think what killed it for me was the pacing of the beginning before everyone set off. I didn't really feel like I knew any of the characters or their motivations that well. I especially didn't really know Mattie. I never really sensed her determination to fuck up Chaney. If she doesn't care then why should I? I honestly didn't give a shit if they caught the guy.

I didn't like Damon's acting or line delivery at all. I felt like I was watching a retarded robot trying to read from cue cards even during the scene where LaBoeuf was spanking Mattie. Maybe it was him alone that killed the movie for me. He was honestly that bad.

The only scene I actually liked was when Rooster was in the courtroom recounting his execution of a man. That scene told me a lot of things about Rooster as a person.

What am I missing here?

Not much, I didn't particularly take to it either.

I don't have any analysis to add or anything, but yeah, you're not alone.

The movie isn't particularly good up until Maddie gets kidnapped. From that point up until the ending of the credits, it's solid gold.

I thoroughly enjoyed it due to Jeff Bridges' dryness when he kills. I also love to see an actor play an atypical role for them, and Jeff Bridges is a very diverse actor.
