So, about a year ago I picked up the board game of Battlestar Galactica (great game btw) and not too long ago, thanks to my board game friend who watched the series and recommended it, I finally decided to watch it.

And holy fuck. I'm speechless. I just finished Season 3 and goddamn. Just goddamn. God fucking damn.

I actually don't know why I missed out on the series when it aired a few years ago. I think because it had to do with SyFy (as they're notorious for, well, poop) I just assumed I wouldn't be interested in it. But this fucking show is one of the best things I've ever seen. It's absolutely brilliant.

I just wanted to have a ramble of how much I love this show after just finishing up Season 3. So, general Battlestar Galactica thread. I might avoid the thread like wildfire so I don't get any spoilers, especially who the last Cylon is. But shit. This show deserves a thread.

Let's talk Muppets and Jim Henson.

When I was a little kid, in the 80s, they used to play Muppet Show reruns that my family would all watch together. Being a child - specifically as one who grew up watching Sesame Steet - the characters had an undeniable energy and life all their own, making them real even to one who knew they were only puppets.

I've recently begun watching The Muppet Show again for the first time in 20-something years (I just finished season 1), and I have to say that being a "grown-up" has done nothing to dispell the magic for me. It's still easy to forget that there's someone (or two) controlling the characters. In fact, being an adult, some characters are that much more believable in their own right now, and impressive to consider the mechanics of. For example, it's only in rewatching the show now that I come to realize Rowlf the Dog and Dr. Teeth of Electric Mayhem are operated as two-person muppets in their musical acts, adding well enough to the illusion of their piano-playing that it can fool even a rather astute eye. It's got me wanting a muppet to play around with, myself.

It seems to me that when most people talk about the genius of Jim Henson, they dwell rather heavily on his later works like Labyrinth and the Dark Crystal, praising his advancements in realistic looking characters and creatures. I say that the Sesame Street/Muppet Show breed of muppets are the more impressive feat for their ability to make you forget that they're only lifeless husks despite their cartoony appearance.

Big disappointment. Worse than snakes on a plane.

No plot, no characters, bad cinematography. The nazis are so diluted and helpless that there is no trace of tension or drama. I couldn't tell if they were whipping their nazi "satire" or their Sarah Palin caricature harder. It goes nowhere and isn't even entertaining during the ride.

You get all the good parts from the trailer.
>> No. 181
All the characters struck me as pretty aimless and hollow, the few that did have motivations quickly seemed to drop or forget them and proceed to do whatever random actions. This was especially prevalent with the Nazis. There appeared to be 3 or so factions of them, but what exactly differentiated them or what their motivations were came across as incredibly lost. The possible exception here being the girl, as she's literally I think the only one that gave a reason behind anything at all, which was spreading the message of true positive National Socialism to the world, but no one else seemed to follow this and she just sorta half abandoned it later on to go 'the hot chick role'; at least until the awkward ending kiss to a comic relief character (that had just killed her father) and it morphed into some weird multicultural thing.

It pretty much just created a really fucking jumbled plot with confusing character archs. I wouldn't mind if it was funny, but I pretty much only chuckled and the little Hitler reacts parody and one or two other little things that I can't even remember now.

I was also quite confused why they had an Einstein archtype as the German scientist; and why the Germans were able to develop advanced spaceships but incapable of advancing beyond giant gear technology, or advancing anywhere else in fashion, weapon design, etc for that matter.
>> No. 194
I bought Iron Sky on Blu-Ray a few days ago. I found it odd that that even though it's a budget film, the special effects were better than 'normal' scenes. The special effects, like the space bits, do look great. It's worth watching just for that.

I found the storyline fresh and interesting, and ending somewhat poetically satisfying. Yeah, it's not exactly Hollywood polished, but I wasn't expecting that.

It's worth buying, if only to support the development of movies outside of Hollywood. Hollywood is stale as fuck.

>>181

I thought their technological progress was realistic. Most of our technologies haven't improved much in sixty years; aside from computers and electronics, few things have changed. We're still driving internal combustion engine cars and flying in the same basic aeroplane designs as existed in the sixties, for example. The Nazis had perfected fusion technology (to use the Helium 3) and their space technology far outpaces Earth's, but their computer technology hadn't kept pace. They focussed on technologies relevant to their environment, which is realistic.

I tried to watch the movie Extinction today. It's a zombie movie that had a deceivingly good preview and was unfortunately $5 dollars on OnDemand. The zombies in the movie are slow, dumb, and hibernate at night instead of emerging at night. This means that at night, the time when things are supposed to be most tense in a zombie movie, there is no threat to the characters. The acting is bad. A man is shot in the stomach and shortly after (the same day) talks as if nothing has happened, despite the fact he is covered in blood. I only watched about half of it, so maybe someone could offer a different opinion.

The new True Grit...

I wanted to like it so bad. I was excited about the movie coming out. Western and Jeff Bridges? I'm there. In fact I had planned to see it in the theater, but couldn't. I finally saw it on NetFlix... I didn't like it. People keep telling me I was supposed to like it though. I watched almost half of it before declaring it crap and watching something else.

I think what killed it for me was the pacing of the beginning before everyone set off. I didn't really feel like I knew any of the characters or their motivations that well. I especially didn't really know Mattie. I never really sensed her determination to fuck up Chaney. If she doesn't care then why should I? I honestly didn't give a shit if they caught the guy.

I didn't like Damon's acting or line delivery at all. I felt like I was watching a retarded robot trying to read from cue cards even during the scene where LaBoeuf was spanking Mattie. Maybe it was him alone that killed the movie for me. He was honestly that bad.

The only scene I actually liked was when Rooster was in the courtroom recounting his execution of a man. That scene told me a lot of things about Rooster as a person.

What am I missing here?

I dunno, if you're into rave culture and psychedelics it's pretty fun. It's got ups and downs, sadness and joy, most of all It's good for a visual feast, the CGI is pretty modest and doesn't look dated, 13 years on.

I just like how they spend the whole film exploring and padding out the glimpse of stuff you get in the first 15 minutes, though it's quite long.

I guess simply because I feel different emotions about the movie (it wasn't that good, really pretentious, but fun, a breath of fresh air, etc) I have to recommend it.

I was watching "Demolition Man" recently and I thought of something that would greatly change the feel of much of the movie: She's his daughter but they don't know it! They probably go on to do everything that should not be done and wind up finding out only once they have a kid or something.
Then I thought "How many movies are there where a reinterpretation of key facts drastically alters how the movie plays out?" I was able to find a few from a quick google search. I only looked for a minute or two, but there have to be more out there.

Basically I wanted to see what other reimaginings of movies you guys have heard of or read or come up with or whatnot.

My process is just sort of starting with a dream or some weird meta sort of concept, then wondering how that situation might manifest. Sometimes it ends up being some small tiny part of the story that develops around it, sometimes it becomes a key element. However I find that my vomit draft is created by starting with something and then making excuses as to why that might happen. Then it's just refining the details; tweaking the holes in the plot and modifying my excuses until things make more sense and eventually, out of this process (which usually takes about 7-10 re writes until I have my script), I get my story. It's refining the details and with every step I get closer and closer to something I'd want to watch. I'm a very event-driven writer.

As per excuses, time. I'm swamped as is.. getting things done a step at a time, when I find I have some.

I thought it was okay. Just okay, it really failed to live up to it's hype.

The soundtrack was snazzy and cool. The girl was real to life hot, I found her very refreshing and loved her little smiles. Finney and Perlman seemed to be having fun chewing the scenery. I agree with >>41 about the cinematography and the technical aspects being very well done. I liked the pacing up until the second half. It went all dark and violent in the second half to try and impress and it failed, failed badly. I don't like that Jake Glyenhall guy very much, I don't think he's much of an actor. I didn't like him in Crazy Stupid Love either.

On a side note, I watched Taxi Driver on IFC the other night and was reminded why Drive a D+ movie, relative to DeNiro and Taxi Driver

I actually watched it and somewhat enjoyed it. Not the best acting in the world but hey. If only David Fincher did it or something, then it would have taken pretty decent real-world source material and made it into something a bit more interesting and memorable.

It's also one of the most notorious examples of modern movie white-washing. All those guys were Asian in real life, just like MIT in real life.
>> No. 67
I thought it was bad. Just like a pseudo-intelligent version of The Girl Next Door. It's absurdly implausible, Kate Bosworth has a bad case of horseface, the main character has the personality of Hayden Christianson (that is to say, none at all), and the entire movie was pulling along by the extremely menacing Lawrence Fishburne and the eternal dick Kevin Spacey (I don't know how he does it, but he's just always an asshole. Impeccable actor though).

I had a lot of problems with it. It was reasonably entertaining and that's about all I can expect from it, but I think better writing and actors could have bumped it up to "pretty good".

I wasn't sure if this would be better at /r/ o here but since this is the TV and Film board then I supposed that there would be more people that knows what I was talking about here.
Also you can post about other movies/series you can't remember here.

I barely remember anything about this movie. It was one of those cheap B movies about some nerdy guy who likes music. He gets bullied a lot but at some point the bully who resulted a softy asks the nerd to musicalize a poem he had written.
At the end of the movie, the nerd guy gets to play in a band and there's this song from which I can only remember the melody.

The song was about daring to dream or something like that.

IMDB has a pretty useful keyword search tool that lets you find movies by their plot keywords though; bully, music, and poem might be good tries for yours. Might be worth a try.

I guess the best way to do it would be to start the main character off as a thief, and have him learn magic (as that is possible), and eventually reform his ways and become a paladin (That's ok because there isn't really all that much to steal in the third and fourth games.
>> No. 24
I really really wanted to finish that series, but could never find 5. By the time I did find 4, I had to do all kinds of weird shit just to get it to run, and even then it was buggy as hell. Didn't even get to finish.

As for a movie, I think it could be cool, but I don't think that it would be done well enough to do the game credit.. If the puns were done subtly in the background or something, it could be funny Maltese Falcons. But if this ever did come to be, they would no doubt all be shoved in your face. "Look! We're being PUNNY! GET IT!!!"

>>21
Very yes. One of my favorite aspects.

>>23
I was thinking of 3 movies, one about each class. But in each one, they often drastically affect what happens to the other guy by doing things we don't actually see in the second person's movie all while they're acting towards the same goal. So once you watch the thief movie, you can watch the fighter movie and see how the thief's actions screwed things up for fighter and vice versa.
>> No. 25
>>24
I loved 5 at the time. Went back and played through them all and just couldn't play 5 it was so clunky and the 3D graphics were so dated. They should've just kept the old engine.

/vg/ aside though, that's exactly how I was imagining it too. 3 movies covering the same time range and roughly the same events, something a bit like Rashomon. But there's so many locations and subplots, I guess I can't really see it working cohesively. For the series to fit in ~2 hours from even one perspective would be covering way too much ground, unless that were part of the "style" (like ADHD Indiana Jones)

I'm pretty sure most people are feeling that way with that season they just wrapped up, most any discussions I witnessed about it were pretty much to that effect at least. Personally, I think it's been rather lackluster ever since the first season wrapped up, gradually more and more losing it's direction, but I tend to be overly-critical of procedurally written telly shows so I dunno. I do like what they started out with though, nice character.
